Abstract:

The Gene Bernardi papers document her career as a research sociologist evaluating anti-poverty programs in the City of Oakland; as a Social and Economic Committee consultant to the State Social Welfare Board; and her volunteer work as a social activist in Berkeley, specifically focused on issues concerning the Berkeley Public Library and the Berkeley City Council and the campaign to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Included in the collection are reports, notes, minutes, correspondence and subject files. The collection does not appear to contain any material related to Bernardi's career with, and subsequent lawsuit against, the U.S. Forest Service. Gene Candide Bernardi was born December 25, 1928 in Berkeley, California. After receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology (1951) and a master's degree in sociology (1964) from the University of California, Berkeley, she worked as a research associate for the City of Oakland. In 1968, she was hired as a research sociologist for the U.S. Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station in Berkeley, specializing in fire prevention. In 1972, she filed a formal complaint of sex discrimination against the U.S. Forest Service for being refused a merited promotion. She left government work in order to work privately in 1975 and in 1981 she was awarded compensation and a raise in classification. Gene Bernardi is the daughter of Theodore C. Bernardi (1903-1990), lecturer emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley in the College of Architecture.
